The situation
Where they started
The Lampstand Group is a registered charity providing safe, stable housing and specialist support for people with lived experience of domestic abuse in Hull and the East Riding. Like most small charities it has no IT department, and every hour its team spends on technology is an hour not spent with the people it supports. As the charity grew, so did the devices, accounts and records to look after.
The challenge
What it was costing them
For most organisations a lost laptop is an insurance claim. For a charity supporting survivors of domestic abuse, the information it holds can include where someone at risk now lives, so a breach could put a person in danger, and lost records can't be re-typed from memory. The cost of getting it wrong is measured in trust, not downtime. And the team needed IT it could understand, because security nobody understands gets worked around.
The approach
How we worked through it
Start with the people, not the kit
We learned how the charity works — who handles what, where the sensitive information lives, how devices are used day to day — so protection went where the real risk is.
Treat every device as if it could go missing
Laptops and phones carry the same sensitive information as the office, and they travel. We secure the devices the team uses, so a lost one is an inconvenience, not a breach.
Backups that can actually be restored
A backup is only worth something if the data comes back. The charity's files and records are backed up and recoverable, so a deleted folder or failed laptop isn't a fresh start.
Plain English, and a quick reply
When something comes up we answer quickly, fix it, and explain what happened and why — without jargon. Security only works if the people using it understand it.
The result
What changed
Sensitive data is protected on the move, records can be recovered after a mistake or a failure, systems run smoothly, and the team has someone it trusts to call. We haven't quoted numbers: good security shows up as incidents that never happen, and we'd rather not invent a figure. The charity's own words are the measure.
In their words
“Lewis has gone above and beyond for us from day one. Nothing has ever been too much trouble… Knowing we have someone we can trust gives us peace of mind, allowing us to focus on the work that really matters, supporting those who need us most.”

What's next
The relationship carries on
The support is ongoing. As Lampstand takes on new staff and devices, each starts protected to the same standard, and devices and backups are kept in good order as the charity's work grows.
